When the Cannabis Act came into effect on October 17, 2018, only a limited number of formats were legal for sale. These included dry flower, oil, capsules, seeds, and seedlings. It was announced at that time however, that after one year, additional formats including edibles, topicals, and concentrates would enter the market.
Health Canada once again held an open consultation period and both the CAVCM and CVMA responded. Among our concerns was the need for a warning label that cautioned consumers to "Keep out of the reach of children AND PETS", and we once again urged Health Canada to update the regulations to include veterinarians as healthcare practitioners permitted to authorize medical cannabis for our patients.
